A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way
Use this checklist to prepare yourself for healthcare in retirement. The more work you do up front, the less hassle you'll have to deal with when it's time to play.
What should you know before you retire?
12 Months Before You Retire
- Ask your employer about any employer-sponsored retirement benefits.
- Think about your ideal retirement lifestyle.
- Consider any long-term healthcare needs.
- Learn about Original Medicare.
- Include your spouse or partner in retirement planning. What are their needs?
- Decide whether you would like to stay put, move or downsize.
- Make a list of travel plans and budget accordingly.
- Get all your regular health screenings done.
9 Months Before You Retire
- Confirm that your doctor and/or specialists accept Medicare.
- Enroll in Medicare Part B if you are retiring AFTER age 65 and will no longer have employer-provided health insurance.
- Meet with your employer benefits manager or human resources contact to find out what you need to do and what information they must provide to Medicare.
6 Months Before You Retire
- Apply for Social Security benefits.
- Apply for Original Medicare Parts A and B if you are retiring at age 65 (and not already receiving your Social Security benefits).
- Enroll in a CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Supplement plan.
