Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) and BlueChoice Plus (POS)
CareFirst’s HMO plans use our BlueChoice network. Except for emergency services, if you go outside of the BlueChoice network, your medical services will not be covered.
With our flexible regional BlueChoice Plus (POS) plans, your cost depends on which network you choose to receive services. BlueChoice Plus plans allow members to see providers in the HMO network, PPO network and outside of our network (where you will likely pay charges that exceed CareFirst’s allowed benefit). If you’re enrolled in a CareFirst Virtual Connect Plus plan (applicable to all D.C. plans except Essential plans), you also have the convenience of 24/7 primary care, urgent care or mental health services virtually through your computer or your CloseKnit mobile app and select in-person locations and providers. In-person locations are available through Comprehensive Primary Care (multiple locations in D.C. and surrounding regions in Maryland and Northern Virginia) as well as CloseKnit's in-person practice at the CareFirst Engagement Center in Baltimore.
All our regional plans include Blue Rewards, in-network benefits for urgent and emergency care and Care Management programs.
