Your Benefits
No matter where you are in your career, you can count on CareFirst to provide the right coverage, answers and support you and your family need. Whether you are a new employee or nearing retirement, we’re here to help you navigate your benefits.
Retirement & Benefits
When you retire, your benefits remain the same as they were when you were actively working. Your premiums will not increase because you are retired. Remember the five-year rule: To keep your medical coverage, you must have five years of continuous enrollment in the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) before you retire.
Medicare & Your Coverage
Combining your CareFirst coverage with Medicare Part A and Part B gives you additional benefits that Medicare alone does not cover. If you are already retired, your CareFirst health benefits will remain the same.
Temporary Continuation of Coverage (TCC)
If you lose coverage, you can continue your CareFirst health benefits with TCC. This allows former employees to continue their healthcare coverage for up to 18 months and eligible family members for up to 36 months. Members enrolling in TCC are responsible for both the employee and employer share of the premium, plus an additional 2% administrative fee.
Other Coverage Options
After leaving the federal government, you may be eligible for a local CareFirst health insurance plan through a different employer or through the Affordable Care Act’s Health Insurance Marketplace.

Prescription Drug Coverage
Eligible Medicare members can get access to lower costs and more approved drugs with the CareFirst Medicare Prescription Drug Program.
Dental & Vision Coverage
Through CareFirst Dental and Vision, you can get access to comprehensive coverage for your dental and vision care needs.
CareFirst Blue Rewards
You and your eligible spouse can earn rewards for completing healthy activities through Blue Rewards. Keep in mind that if you leave CareFirst, you will lose unused rewards. Be sure to use them before your coverage expires.
