Save Money with Your Plan
Know before you go
Visiting the wrong provider for a medical need can end up costing you more than you might think. To make sure you pay the lowest out-of-pocket costs:
- See your doctor (primary care provider - PCP) first, unless s/he is unavailable or the situation is a true emergency. Your doctor can help you decide the appropriate steps to seek care.
- Take advantage of FirstHelp. This is a free, 24-hour nurse advice line you can call to speak to a registered nurse.
- Do a Video Visit. If your employer offers a nurse line or video visit option, consider using one of these options to save time and money.
- Visit a retail health clinic (such as local pharmacy) for accessible care that has extended hours.
- Go to an urgent care center when a doctor is needed outside of normal hours – nights and weekends.
- Only go to an emergency room (ER) if there is an acute illness or trauma. Call 911 or go straight to the ER for life-threatening conditions.
Understand the Site of Care
When you see your doctor for an illness visit, you may be responsible for a small copay. If you went to the hospital for something similar, there may be added costs such as doctor/specialist fees, lab tests and facility fees that go straight to the facility to cover their operations. You can avoid these fees when you understand the kind of care you need and where to get it.
