New Hire Essentials
CareFirst is a marketplace leader in more ways than one. We are the largest healthcare company in the Mid-Atlantic region, support our employees’ financial and physical health through competitive benefits, and are an employment destination for you to apply and develop your skills. We believe in a growth mindset and support employees in driving their own learning and development, while guiding leaders to invest in their teams.
Total Rewards
Total Rewards is everything that
CareFirst provides to support your overall well-being as an employee. It includes your pay, incentives, workplace amenities, paid
time off, and benefit programs like health insurance and wellness programs.
You’ll receive information on the benefits available, how to access program details, and how to enroll during Orientation. For eligible employees, you can expect benefits that require enrollment (medical, dental, vision and life insurance) to take effect on your 31st day of employment.

Note: Some benefits listed may only be available to part-time employees on a prorated basis. Interns, temporary or contingent employees, and part-time employees who are regularly scheduled to work fewer than 20 hours per week are not eligible for CareFirst benefits.
Payroll
Paychecks are issued bi-weekly on Fridays,
following the annual pay schedule. The exact date of your first paycheck will be provided during Orientation, or you may follow up
with your Talent Acquisition Specialist to confirm.
Remote Workspace Stipend
As a new employee (full-time,
part-time or intern), you will receive a one-time stipend to use to enhance your remote workspace. It will be paid in a lump sum
payment after your start date. Eligible employees must have a remote or hybrid worker profile.
With our continued emphasis on equity, this stipend aligns with our benefit premium structure where the cost of health insurance varies depending on income.
- Employees earning a salary at or less than $115,000 will receive a $200* stipend
- Employees earning a salary more than $115,000 will receive a $100* stipend
- Company Officers or anyone in Band X are not eligible for a stipend
*This is a taxable expense, so the amount is grossed up. CareFirst is paying the taxes.
Performance
We believe individual success is the key
to CareFirst’s overall success, and our performance management approach reflects this belief in its tie to reward and recognition.
The CareFirst Performance Life Cycle (PLC) is a year-long, collaborative process between people leader and employee that identifies
goals, enables development, facilitates self-reflection, and evaluates performance. Achievement of individual goals, as well as
CareFirst’s achievement of corporate goals, drives our incentive and merit pay through programs designed to motivate and reward
employees for their contributions.
Learning & Development
Employee and leadership development is
critical to fulfill the CareFirst vision, strategy and plan. With highly skilled and engaged interns, part-time associates, and
temporary or contingent employees, CareFirst is better positioned to support and empower our members, our partners and our
communities. As a part of our enterprise learning strategy, LinkedIn Learning is CareFirst's 24/7 hub for e-learning and is
available to all employees. Ensure your personal LinkedIn Profile is set up so you can activate LinkedIn Learning upon your start
date with CareFirst.
